I wish I could say it's finished. But we've hit a snag. This is what it looks like so far:
The space is so massive it makes the TV look tiny...even though it's 50"
Almost there, but something's missing. A shelf. Original plans included a shelf but along the way, there were concerns that a shelf that size would be too heavy and bow in the middle over time. So we put the shelf on hold.
But now I want it back. I promise not to put anything heavy on the shelf! So back to the original plans to include a shelf. I'll let you know how it goes.
(*note: I think said "shelf" about 50 times in this post!)

Lookin' good. You could put a center devider in half way across and make it like two wide cubbies or do 4 cubbies and put baxkets in. You could also do narrow shelves down each side that would add support too. Can't wait to see it finished.
You could even put two "L" shaped brackets in the middle to suppost the weight. I'm not sure what they are called.
Hey there, ran across your blog when it was linked from All Things Thrifty. I have been following a few of your DIY projects, including this entertainment cabinet. The house we just bought has 2 cutouts identical to yours. One of them I would like to turn into a bookcase with storage, pretty much doing a cabinet below like you did and then maybe 2 shelves. I was wondering if you could give me a few tips on the process you and your hubby did, cause the finish product is gorgeous.
